MOBILE COVERAGE PLANNER

See where mobile coverage may drop out

Plan an Australian road trip and see where your route is likely to move in and out of mobile coverage. Compare carriers, identify longer coverage gaps and decide whether you need a more reliable way to stay connected.

USE THE ESTIMATE AS A STARTING POINT

What a coverage map can—and cannot—tell you

Published coverage is useful for planning, but it cannot account perfectly for every hill, valley, tree line, device, antenna position or network condition. Use the planner to identify where a route may need more preparation, then check current carrier information and choose communications equipment appropriate to the trip.

Predicted coverage is not a guarantee

Terrain, vegetation, weather, device capability and network demand can change real-world reception.

Grey does not mean confirmed no coverage

Grey sections indicate insufficient data and should be treated as uncertain rather than safe or unsafe.

Remote travel needs layered planning

Mobile service, satellite internet, satellite phones and personal locator beacons serve different purposes. Internet access is not a substitute for dedicated emergency equipment.

Mobile Coverage Planner FAQs

Is the coverage data live?

No. The beta uses historical predicted outdoor coverage data rather than real-time carrier information. Check the current official carrier maps before travelling.

Which mobile networks can I compare?

The launch beta supports Telstra, Optus and Vodafone / TPG.

Does the planner account for terrain and vegetation?

Not directly. The source layers predict outdoor coverage at a broad scale, but they cannot model every local hill, valley, tree line, vehicle position or temporary network condition.

What do grey route sections mean?

Grey indicates that the planner could not classify that route section from the available data. It does not confirm either coverage or no coverage.

Can I use the planner for off-road tracks?

You can use prepared stops or manual itinerary points, but the generated road route may differ from a recognised off-road track. Check access, closures, conditions and authoritative route advice separately.

Does Starlink Mini work while travelling?

The planner does not assess Starlink availability or in-motion eligibility. Check the current Starlink service terms for your plan and intended use. Starlink Mini also requires sufficient power and a suitable view of the sky.

Do I still need a satellite phone or personal locator beacon?

Remote trips may require dedicated emergency equipment appropriate to the route and conditions. Mobile service and satellite internet should not be treated as substitutes for a personal locator beacon, satellite phone or other emergency system where those are appropriate.
